Offshore Racing Program

Welcome back to another season of MudRatz sailing!

The offshore program is new this year.   Please see more information about our start under Bluewater Sailing.  The offshore program will begin in July after the Bermuda Race is completed.

Expenses for this program will be shared among team members, but we hope to keep at the $175 per season level.

While we have no age limits – the team should be mostly 14 to 23 years old.

We plan to run practices on Tuesday nights this summer and compete in the Tri-State Youth Offshore Challenge series of regattas.

  • “Mudnight Madness Overnight” (July 27, 2018 – organized by the Mystic River Mudhead Sailing Association)
  • Race Around Shelter Island (August 3, 2018 – organized by the Shelter Island YC)
  • Ida Lewis Distance Race (August 17, 2018 – organized by the Ida Lewis YC).

Any sailors wishing to race with the Offshore Racing Program team must have completed at least five full practices (with a final evaluation completed by head coach).

Time: 5:30 PM

Dates: Five Tuesday nights starting July 3rd

Cost:  TBD (plus $30 uniform for new sailors & $15 MudHead membership if not currently a member – see below).

What to expect and prepare your offshore sailors for next…

Our head coach will reach out to you to set up a work date to prep the boats for the season.  We will then confirm the practice times for the next few weeks.  Expect a few practices to be overnights around Block Island and beyond as we get the team ready for offshore racing.

Boats, Gear, and Volunteers…

Please make sure sailors are dressed for sailing (drysuits, smocks, gloves, boots, hats) as we sail in ALL weather, rain, wind, snow, and sun.  Please bring a snack and water-bottle as well.   Each season we see sailors become limited by the clothes they have… dress for success… you would not go onto the ball field without cleats!

Sailors should be ready to sail BY the start of practice each day, we are not paying coaches to get the boat ready, so you should plan to arrive early enough to be ready to sail on time.

Parents and sailors – Please ask how you can help... we are a volunteer team and there is always something that needs to be done each week.  Thank you for being part of our team.  We really hope to create a good experience for everyone!

MudRatz Mission statement: The mission of the MudRatz is to complement local youth sailing programs by enabling sailors to improve as a team and travel around the world.
